 Satil

Satil (Achi Sufa) - Wreck Dive

Background story:

In 1969, after the 6-day war, the French governament embargoed Israel and prevented the arrival of 5 war ships over to Israel. One of these ships was the "Achi Sufa". These ships were built in Sharburg, France and were stolen at the dead of night from the port and brought to Israel.

These ships served the Israeli Navy for nearly 25 years and as all other vessels of their time, they grew old and were put aside to make room for new and improved war vessels. In 1994 one of these missile ships was sunk in the bay of Eilat and transformed into one of the most popular wreck dives in Eilat.
The Satil also serves as a "pilgramage" site as there are 2 small monuments on it: the first was built in memory of an Israeli Navy comando soldier who died in the first Lebanon war and the second was built in memory of a diving instructor who was killed in a terrorist attack in a hotel in Netanya. The Satil wreck dive was one of their favorite sites in Eilat.

Diving the Wreck:

Entrance to this site is from the stairs adjacent to the 'Village beach' and 'Marine Divers Dive Center'. On the surface you will find 1-2 buoys marking the bow and bridge of the ship. Descend on the beach and follow your compass at 90 degrees towards these buoys (you can also swim on the surface to the buoys and descend straight above the wreck). The slope is steep and drops very fast to app. 18m. After descending, at around 10m, you will find a big coral formation and after a few minutes the 'Satil' will emerge from the blue. This is a thrilling sensation even for those of you who have dives wrecks before.

Upon your arrival to the wreck start by exploring the bow at 22m where you will find the canon room which can be penetrated (in-out from the same entrance). Continue south along the ships side where you will pass by some doors – have a peek inside as there may be some interesting creatures in there but don't penetrate these doors as they are blocked from the inside. Continue towards the stern where you will find the engine rooms. These two rooms can be penetrated and have a door connecting between them. This is a narrow door so be sure to pass through one by one.

On the stern you will notice a round monument built in 2000 in memory of Roy Keller who died in the first Lebanon war. Roys parents built this monument in his favorite dive-site.

From the stern, at 27m, begin rising towards the bridge which is probably the most interesting and beautiful part of this dive. The mast of the 'Satil' is rich with soft and hard colorful corals, big groupers, millions of glass fish and lion fish.

This is a good time to check your air and if you have enough of it carry on into the bridge.

The bridge has 2 doors. Use the right one for entering and the left for exiting – this is an important rule especially when the wreck is full of divers. In the bridge you will enjoy large numbers of sweepers enjoying the dark atmosphere of the room and some lion fish. If you lean forward towards the front windows you will be able to see the ships bow at its entirety.

From here start your way back to shore – 270 degrees on your compass.

This is a relatively deep dive so be sure to perform a proper safety stop on the slope. During the safty stop be sure to look around you as some interesting creatures may come by such as octopus, squid, tunas, scorpion fish, sea horses and many more.

Exit from the site is through the same stairs we entered from.

For experienced divers and for those who are familiar with the site, one of the best dives here is a night dive.
